Shire of Mundaring Art Acquisition exhibition 2018
The Rider, oil on canvas, previously acquired by the Shire of Mundaring will be on show at the Mundaring Art Centre from February 9 –April 1, 2018.
In 2006, an Invitational group exhibition From Track To Trail, traced community life around the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail.
The Rider represents landscape and histories that have developed around this railway line, particularly around the tunnel, located in the J Forrest National Park.
Artist statement
“When the rider enters the tunnel, time stands still. It’s as if the stories of the railway line engulf the figure. The tunnel is a reminder of the hardship endured by the anonymous railway men involved in the excavation and construction of the railway line. The text incorporated in the landscape represents fragments of the passenger’s thoughts and conversations during the train journey. The rider illustrates the contemporary thirst for re connection with nature. The rich monochromatic glaze is used to merge the layers of these past and present experiences”.
